My phone came with a collage maker in the gallery, but it could barely do anything nice or useful. So I searched online for alternatives, and I found many. Tools that wanted an account, tools that uploaded my photos to a server, tools that were too simple, or so packed with features that making a quick collage took an hour. None of them gave me the free canvas I had in my head. So I built the one I was looking for, and made it publicly available for others to enjoy.
The idea of making a photo collage rarely arrives when you are at a desk. It arrives during or just after a nice moment you want to capture and share: still at the table after dinner, on the walk home, on the bus the next morning. Let me make something out of this. Something that tells my partner or my friends that I really enjoyed being together, and leaves them with a tangible memory that captures the different moods of that moment.
That means it has to work on a phone, in a browser, with nothing to install and nothing to sign up for. It also means plenty of layouts to pick from: neat grids when you want it clean, loose scattered snapshots when you want it playful. Different moments want different shapes.
Everything happens inside your own browser. Your photos are read by the browser, drawn onto a canvas, and saved straight back to your phone. Nothing is uploaded, because there is no server to upload to.
Try it yourself: open Kiekaroni, put your phone in airplane mode, and you will see it still works. That is not a promise you have to take my word for; it is something you can check in ten seconds.
Kiekje is a Dutch word for snapshot. Add a cheerful Italian ending, the kind you know from macaroni, and you get a name you can spell after hearing it once. Hopefully it makes you smile a little too.
I am not a programmer. I kept reading online about vibe coding and wanted to find out whether it really works: describing what you want to an AI that acts as an experienced designer and developer, and steering it iteratively. This is my first published vibe-coded project. It took a lot more rounds than I expected, and I learned a lot.
